Daleen Roodt

Where botanical science meets wonder and devotion

The Artist of Nature’s Hidden Worlds
A Journey Through Botanical Wonder

Daleen Roodt is a South African botanical artist celebrated for her luminous portrayals of indigenous orchids and the intricate relationships between plants and their pollinators. Working primarily in watercolour, vellum, silverpoint and copper etching, her art moves between scientific precision and emotional storytelling, capturing not only the anatomy of a plant, but the atmosphere, fragility and spirit of the natural world itself.

Based in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal, Daleen began her artistic journey in 2008 as a freelance scientific illustrator for the University of Pretoria and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). Entirely self-taught, she has since become internationally recognised for her extraordinary depictions of South Africa’s indigenous orchid species and their highly specialised ecological relationships.

Her work is deeply rooted in direct observation and field study. Spending countless hours immersed in forests, wetlands, mountain grasslands and remote botanical habitats, Daleen sketches plants in situ, often documenting the insects, birds and environmental elements that coexist with them. This devotion to authenticity allows her artworks to transcend traditional botanical illustration and become poetic meditations on biodiversity, conservation and wonder.

Artistic Practice

Daleen’s artistic language is shaped by a profound reverence for nature’s interconnected systems. Her paintings often feature orchids alongside their pollinators — bees, butterflies, flies and sunbirds — revealing the delicate ecological choreography required for these species to survive. Through this approach, she creates artworks that are both scientifically informative and emotionally evocative.

Her preferred mediums include watercolour on paper and vellum, copper etching and silverpoint, techniques that allow for exceptional detail, subtle luminosity and layered texture. Whether painting a rare mountain orchid hidden in mist-covered grasslands or illustrating a fleeting pollinator interaction, Daleen’s work invites viewers into an intimate encounter with the living landscape.

International Recognition & Awards

Daleen Roodt has earned international recognition for her exceptional contribution to contemporary botanical art, with her work celebrated for its rare balance of scientific precision, emotional depth and artistic refinement. Her detailed portrayals of indigenous orchids and their specialised pollinator relationships have positioned her among the leading botanical artists of her generation.

In 2024, she received international acclaim at the Royal Horticultural Society Botanical Art & Photography Show in London, where her exhibition Orchids: Specialised Pollinator Interactions was awarded the prestigious RHS Gold Medal, the Best Botanical Artwork Award and the People’s Choice Award. In the same year, she was honoured with the Best in Show Award at the 27th Annual International Exhibition of the American Society of Botanical Artists and the Society of Illustrators in New York.

Her artworks form part of distinguished collections including the Shirley Sherwood Collection and the Grootbos Florilegium, alongside numerous private and institutional collections internationally, affirming her place as one of South Africa’s most celebrated botanical artists.

Exhibitions & Collaborations

Over the course of her career, Daleen has undertaken a diverse range of commissions and collaborative projects. These include documenting indigenous flora for conservation initiatives, illustrating scientific publications and field guides, creating artwork for wine labels and editorial publications, and producing collections centred on South African tree and orchid species.

Her work has taken her across Southern Africa and beyond — from the forests of Cambodia to the grasslands of Botswana and Namibia — always guided by a fascination with the quiet, often overlooked beauty of the natural world.

Artist Statement

“There is a certain allure to being surrounded by nature, to being consumed by the vastness offered by an endless landscape of forest, valley, or mountain slope. Then, finding a delicate little orchid, easily overlooked where it grows tucked between wild grasses, overwhelms me with ecstasy, a realization of the essence of my passion.” — Daleen Roodt

Where Science Meets Reverent Detail

Daleen Roodt’s artistic practice is grounded in disciplined observation, fieldwork and refined technical mastery. Her process begins in the natural environment, where she studies plants in situ across forests, grasslands and mountain ecosystems, carefully documenting not only the botanical subject but also its ecological context. This includes field sketches, compositional studies, and notes on structure, growth habit and the subtle relationships between plants and their pollinators.

In the studio, these observations are translated through a slow, layered process that balances scientific precision with artistic sensitivity. Working primarily in watercolour on paper and vellum, she builds luminosity through transparent washes, allowing forms to emerge gradually with depth, clarity and delicacy. Her use of vellum in particular enables an exceptional level of detail, where surface, texture and light interact in a soft, almost ethereal way.

She also works in copper etching and silverpoint, mediums that require patience, control and a deep understanding of line. These techniques allow her to render the intricate structure of orchids and the fine anatomy of pollinators with striking precision. Each mark is deliberate, each layer carefully considered, resulting in works that feel both scientifically exact and quietly alive.

Her process is ultimately one of devotion — a sustained dialogue between observation and interpretation, where patience, time and reverence for the natural world become as essential as the materials themselves.

A Global Botanical Legacy

Daleen Roodt’s influence within contemporary botanical art extends beyond her technical mastery into the broader fields of conservation awareness, scientific illustration and environmental appreciation. Her work is widely regarded for bridging the gap between art and science, bringing renewed attention to the intricate relationships between indigenous South African flora and their pollinators. Through her detailed and emotionally resonant depictions of orchids and other rare plant species, she has contributed to a deeper public understanding of biodiversity and ecological interdependence.

Her artistic voice has helped shape a renewed global interest in botanical art as both a scientific and expressive discipline. By combining field-based observation with refined studio technique, she continues to inspire both emerging and established botanical artists, particularly in how nature can be documented with accuracy while still carrying emotional and narrative depth.

Daleen’s work is held in several significant collections that reflect her international standing. These include the prestigious Shirley Sherwood Collection, one of the most important collections of contemporary botanical art in the world, and the Grootbos Florilegium, a celebrated South African collection dedicated to documenting the unique flora of the Cape Floristic Region. In addition, her artworks are held in numerous private and institutional collections across South Africa and internationally, further affirming her role as a key figure in the preservation and celebration of botanical heritage through art.
