VIVE LA BRETAGNE

A CERAMIC PANEL FOR THE  CHÂTEAU DES TESNIÈRES by
MADELEINE HENNING

About the Foundation’s Support

Having experienced the extraordinary talent exhibited by Madeleine during past commissions, it was an easy decision for the counsel members to grant her a bursary for nine months and a tenure at the Cité International des Arts in Paris, in the execution of a monumental ceramic panel, depicting the marriage between Queen Ann of Brittany and the King of France, Louis XII.  Anne of Brittany was reigning Duchess of Brittany from 1488 until her death, and Queen of France from 1491 to 1498 and from 1499 to her death in 1514. She was the only woman to have been queen consort of France twice, first to Charles VIII until his death in 1498 and then to his successor, Louis XII.  King Louis XII was deeply in love with Queen Ann and they had two daughters, of which one married the future King of France, Francis I.

The ceramic panel, prominently displayed in the château, depicts the marriage festival of the couple, set in the typical verdant landscape of Brittany as seen through one of the castle windows - a fitting homage to Château des Tesnières' positioned on the border of the ancient Duchy of Brittany.
